Touring 2006.03

Production: Satoshi Tomiie presents GLOW 2006.03
Satoshi Tomiie pres. Glow "Glow"

Renaissance is delighted to announce a very fresh start for 2006 − 3D, a compilation that welcomes a new concept and DJ to the label’s ever-growing series of albums. First to take up the challenge is US-based Japanese wunderkind Satoshi Tomiie. An integral member of New York City’s prestigious Def Mix collective, Satoshi is famed for his blistering productions and remixes, and his pioneering SAW Recordings label. Clubbers across the world know him for the incredible DJ sets that see him criss-cross the globe on a regular basis, making him one of dance music’s most respected and loved ambassadors and an immediate candidate to launch the new Renaissance 3D project.

As the name suggests, 3D is a triple album, with each disc drawing on the key musical aspects of Satoshi’s career. First up is CLUB, a bang-up-to-date recording of his live sets; then there’s STUDIO, a CD that really proves Satoshi’s commitment to the project with its seven exclusive remixes and re-edits of the likes of Photek, Kosheen & Hybrid; finally the HOME CD switches gear and delves into Satoshi’s personal collection of favorite cuts.

”It takes a unique artist to qualify for 3D,” says Renaissance’s director Geoff Oakes. “They need a major body of studio work, a high-profile performing schedule and the depth of musical knowledge to put together an interesting mix of home favorites. Given this criteria, Satoshi was an obvious choice.”

SAW051: CHAB “LOVER” (SATOSHI TOMIIE REMIXES)
As featured on Renaissance 3D: Satoshi Tomiie

Renaissance Presents 3D: Satoshi Tomiie offers more minutes of music than you might be able to handle on your own two feet at a club. The three-hour, 46-minute DJ-mixed compilation is a dance-music opus, starting with the building waves of a big-room warm-up, marching on to the pounding surf of relentless prog- and tech-house, and calming toward the glassy waters of soul, funk, and chill-out.

Renaissance Presents 3D: Satoshi Tomiie not only shows a reluctant industry the beauty of giving music lovers more to love, it also proves that Tomiie has joined the likes of Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed, and Danny Howells as a DJ’s DJ. After all these years, Tomiie is finally being recognized as a true musician on the decks. −Dennis Romero

Time Out New York
The veteran DJ and producer Satoshi Tomiie sometimes seems like the forgotten man of the Def Mix collective, a group of house-music vets that counts such seminal figures as David Morales and Frankie Knuckles among its members. That’s a shame; while the better-known Morales and Knuckles are happy to stick with the classic house sound that first brought them to fame back in the ’80s, the more modest Tomiie—who also heads the popular SAW Recordings label—has always  tweaked his sound to the times. Tomiie’s predilection for keeping current is very much in evidence on 3D, released by the mix-CD mavens of the U.K.’s Renaissance crew.  3D is a sprawling three-disc affair, with each CD illustrating a different side of the Tomiie sound. The first (subtitled Club) is a taste of what’s on the DJ’s playlist, with selections from the deeper end of electrohouse serving as an au courant approximation of his live sets. Studio covers Tomiie’s production career and is where Tomiie’s evolution comes into play. Luscious late-’80s/early-’90s house tracks like “Tears” and “The Theme” give way to ever more progressive tracks, culminating in big-room (yet still pretty darn deep) tunes such as his reworking of Hybrid’s “Higher Than a Skyscraper.” CD three is called Home; apparently, Satoshi’s crib rocks to the deep disco of M.F.S.B.’s “Mysteries Of The World”, early-house rarities like Bou-Kan’s “Magic” and soothing jazz-funk from the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith. All three of these discs are thoroughly enjoyable listens, but it’s not exactly hit-you-over-the-head material—and perhaps that’s fitting for someone who seems content to let others stand in the spotlight.—Bruce Tantum

SF Weekly
Talented New York based DJ/producer Satoshi Tomiie belongs in a rarefied circle of veteran house DJs. Convenient, then, that he has been business partners with Frankie Knuckles (the "Godfather of House") and David Morales (the, um, pinup of house) for almost 20 years. Tomiie's record label, SAW Recordings, turns five this year, and a few CDs aside, its main focus has been to provide other DJs with hot wax for their dance floors. Tomiie tends to favor a darker, more tribalistic sound than his colleagues these days, but he has roots in a brighter style. He recently released a mix CD for the 3D series hosted by U.K. superclub Renaissance. The set includes three discs: one with a mix resembling Tomiie's nightclub sets, one with his original productions and remixes, and one for post-party listening. It's a great way to get acquainted with the artist's range, but there's no substitute for catching Satoshi Tomiie DJing in person. − Tamara Palmer
